Believe me, no one understands more than I do the importance of heading into a book with the freshest eyes possible, especially when it comes to this series. Regardless, if you’d rather avoid all coverage of this novel until you’ve read it for yourself, I totally get that too. Now that that’s out of the way, I will proceed with the rest of my review, which I’ve gone to great lengths to keep as vague as possible and spoiler-free. If you haven’t picked up Morning Star yet but you are reading this review, chances are you’re probably wondering if I think this final volume is worth reading-a question to which I can provide a definitive answer. Book Review: Morning Star by Pierce Brown ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The characters he creates are rich and believable. I should say first that Robinson is a stylist of the first order, and the texture of his prose is a beautiful thing. This lead me somehow to the works of Kim Stanley Robinson. They wrote better than the bulk of the hard SF writers that filled the shelves at the used bookstores I frequented, they were more "literary." But in the past year or so, I started rereading some of the authors that I had discarded before high school, and I rediscovered the wonder and joy of great imaginative storytelling. Later I discovered the wonder that is Gene Wolfe. When I was about 14, I decided I was more interested in grown up SF, and read more of the experimental New Wavers, Dick, Delany, Sturgeon and Ellison. I've read science fiction pretty regularly since I was pretty young, devouring my father's and uncles' collections indiscriminately. So I'm kind of in that stage with Kim Stanley Robinson. Hell, I read really fast, so it's not like I don't have time. I tend to go on binges when I discover a writer I really like, taking down as many of their works as I possibly can voraciously for the first few months of my acquaintanceship with their works. ![]() 6/8/2023 0 Comments Ishmael book![]() ![]() So what is most frustrating to the narrator (in the passage above) is that he senses he has all the tools to discover this on his own, but lacks a system by which to properly use those tools. In fact, much of what Ishmael teaches the narrator involves knowledge he already has - what is new is the way Ishmael arranges that information, the new perspective on it that he presents. He felt that he was being lied to about something, but could never articulate what that lie was.Īs we discover both in this passage and through the novel, the frustration comes from the difficulty, and not the desire. ![]() In his teenage years, the narrator sought a teacher who could tell him what was wrong with the world. Still, it is amusing to hear Chewie say things like “ When building security arrives, they’ll keep you safe until Han catches up with a military detail. This is the point, I suppose – rendering Chewbacca as an ordinary (albeit hirsute) guy with a minor family problem to resolve as opposed to just Bigfoot with a welding torch. To be fair, aside from the barrage of made-up SF terms that Denning bombards the reader with in the opening paragraph, Chewie comes across as your typical honour-driven character, a bit like a Klingon or a Narn. I’m not quite sure whether I was entirely prepared for a novella where Chewbacca’s utterances are rendered as anything other than “Rrrooowwrr”, but is quite a refreshing conceit for a shortish story. ![]() |
